ISO: Photographer | Mini Sessions VS. Custom Sessions

April 13, 2020

One of the cheapest and quickest ways to get good quality photographs is to utilize “mini sessions”.  Mini Sessions are something a lot of photographers offer because they’re a great benefit to clients, potential clients, AND they’re something that allows photographers to quickly get a lot of images in a single day.  These “petite” sessions aren’t for everyone and there are a few differences between a mini session and a custom session. Here’s what you need to know before deciding which shoot is best for you!

TIME LIMITS

The main difference between the two is obviously the amount of time used to photograph.  Whereas a custom shoot can typically last an hour or more, mini sessions are fast pace and usually last only between 15 – 30 minutes. Although there may be a big difference between 15 – 30 minutes, each photographer has their own preference.

NUMBER OF POSES

While custom sessions allow for as many poses as the client wants, mini sessions are much more limited.  During a mini session, we must use the resources readily available to capture as many candid moments as possible in a shorter amount of time.

NUMBER OF SUBJECTS

Just like the limited number of poses, mini sessions are primarily only for smaller groups and or individuals.  Photographing a large group of people is difficult in such a limited amount of time.

NUMBER OF IMAGES

Even though we try to shoot as much as possible during the mini sessions, you’ll end up with fewer photos than you would if you had booked a custom session. The total number of images and the amount of retouching depends on your photographer.

Session Style

Again, like the number of poses, outfit, location, and prop changes are rare in mini sessions.  Custom Sessions are typically personalized to each client and can include a multitude of different settings to better fit the client’s vision. However, during a mini session, there is a set time frame, location, and style for every photoshoot, all chosen by the photographer.

Custom sessions allow clients to have more play whereas mini sessions are typically quick and seamless. Whichever option you decide to go with, rest assured that I take every aspect of your session into consideration.

I look forward to working with you!
