Several weeks ago while we were at my future sister-in-law's (FSIL) house; she had mentioned that she wished her wedding photographer had photographed more things differently. The photos aren't bad and the photographer made sure to capture the festivities in their entirety. However, my FSIL isn't rushing to showcase them all over her home and it got me thinking. I started looking through her images and saw some opportunities where her photographer could have had a second shooter. Now you’re probably wondering what a second shooter is and what the benefits are to having one may be; so check out 5 benefits to having a second shooter!
To start, a second shooter is just that. It’s an additional photographer complimenting the work of the “lead” photographer.
Two Cameras are Better than One
We may have hoverboards, Siri, and robot vacuums, but we still can’t teleport or clone ourselves. Photographing both the bride and groom getting ready is difficult when you’re a one (wo)man show. With a second shooter, the photographer can be in two places at once.

Angles are Everything
One of my favorite things about having a second shooter is having the celebration photographed from multiple angles. There are so many different emotions happening throughout that the best and easiest way to capture as many as possible is to have a secondary photographer stationed across, behind, or to the side of you.

The Little Moments
At every wedding, you have the stereotypical shot list. Multiple photographs of the newlyweds, the family, the wedding party, the cutting of the cake, and of course the first dances. However, some of the best photographs come from the little moments in between thus allowing for those special candid images.

I.C.E.
Life is unpredictable and anything could happen. If something were to happen to your photographer and you didn’t have a second shooter lined you, you would be up the creek without a paddle. A second shooter can act as a security blanket if something ever happens to your lead photographer. Thankfully, this has never personally happened to me before but it’s comforting to know there’s a backup.
Dos Brains
Although the styles and techniques of every photographer differ, there’s nothing quite like collaborating. By having two photographers, not only do you as the client get double the photos, but both the lead photographer and the second shooter gain a better experience working together and brainstorming ideas!
Having a second shooter can add an unbelievable amount of value to your experience and I encourage you to consider it when booking a photographer.
Much love to my very own second shooter, Ellen...AKA my mom!!!! <3
